Artistic Research through Ceramic Practice

In Artistic Research, art itself is an investigative process, and a research question can be answered not only by observing, but through creative practice. Students will develop a question about themselves or the world, and the clay will answer, acting as our teacher, oracle, and data point. Each of us will collect the images, ideas, and experiences that are informing our thinking, and will bring these to the clay to see what answers emerge. Each week, we will study new techniques in clay, and will go through the entire process of handbuilding, glazing, firing, and displaying ceramic pieces. This class is a space for developing a creative way to investigate big questions, and a curious way to approach art, and is a space for chipping away at mental and artistic blocks.

- Desired audience
- This class is for anyone with big questions about themselves and the world. It can be especially helpful for those who are entering a new phase personally or creatively and want a space to work through new ideas. It can be a space to approach questions that you have been sitting with for a long time, or a space to learn how to even begin to come up with questions.

We use a sliding scale to make courses as affordable as possible. Here’s how to use it: Lower end: You don’t have a stable income.
